Glenn Underground

glenn700Iconic Chicago house producer Glenn Underground shares some of the records he has recently discovered with us.

Born into a musical family in Chicago, 1971, Glenn Underground grew up surrounded by the sounds of soul, freeform jazz and disco. Inspired by these early musical influences, as well as the music by Chicago pioneers Larry Heard, Lil’ Louis and Ron Hardy, Glenn’s own blend of soulful and deep house and techno-oriented music has since been shared with the world via such labels as Peacefrog, Dance Mania, Cajual, Prescription and more, as well as his own label Strictly Jaz Unit.

Having been a keen record collector since the mid-80s, we caught up with Glenn to find out a few of the tracks he’s recently unearthed

Faze-O – Riding High

A Chicago Steppers classic.  Chicago Steppin’ is an improvisational form of partner dancing with its roots in such dance styles as the Chicago Bop, the Lindy Hop and Western Swing. This smooth and classy art form is primarily danced to old school, soul, jazz, and r&b music.

The Art Of Noise – Moments In Love (7″ Version)

Another Steppers joint that has been sampled by dozens of artists. Amazing work from Trevor Horn and company.

Larry Heard – Summer Breeze

Larry is more than deep house music.  Larry is jazz, electronica, techno and epic atmospheric compositions.  Many if not most of Larry’s early releases took a while before actually being pressed to vinyl. Some predate the official label by a few years!  Larry is arguably the true Godfather of House & Techno music.

4 Hero – Sophia

The West London heroes of Dego, Marc Mac and the soldiers of 4 Hero can do no wrong.  The Broken beat story is as interesting and intriguing as the House Music story.  Respect!

Dr Buzzards Original Savannah Band – Sunshowers

Super soulful music that goes great in Northern England.  Also another Stepper’s delight!
