A Detroit native, Waajeed is an interminable pillar of the city’s musical core. Rising to recognition in the nineties as one half of hip-hop duo Pied Pipers and as a DJ and producer for Slum Village, he solidified his place in hip-hop history. Since then, he’s been turning his talents towards the dancefloor, holding down multiple Detroit Love residencies and working on a range of collaborations with other city stalwarts including Amp Fiddler, Mad Mike Banks and Theo Parrish.
His latest EP, ‘Mother’ is set for release mid-March on Carl Craig’s iconic Planet E imprint, with Craig himself providing additional mixing on the EP. The title track, our selection for this week’s premiere, features emotive vocals from Detroit singer-songwriter Steffanie Christi’an, driven forward by an arpeggiated synth lead and shuffling percussion.
