Phonica Mix Series 123:
Chinese Daughter

phonica mix BANNER 123

Phonica ventures down to South London for its 123rd mix in its long running series.
Leila Beesley also known by everyone as Chinese Daughter has been stretching the sounds of original, new, and future jungle records alongside the sounds of bass-lead old school rave, future hardcore, and breaks. While also working behind the scenes at Warp records, taking to her regular show on Rinse FM and repping the Swamp 81 crew; you can also find Beesley at parties all over the UK and further afield(not forgetting her smashing set at our 20th anniversary at fabric last year). The set she has supplied for us here is no different. Mixed on all vinyl Chinese Daughter here showcases a broad spectrum of 2010’s bass gold, kicking drums and party going anthems all built together in a beautifully seamless narrative. We had a quick chat with Leila about the mix and what she has coming up:

Hey Leila, thanks for joining us! Can you tell us about your mix and what the idea behind it was? Can you tell us a bit about how you usually approach recording a mix or a set?

I’m know for Jungle but this mix was a wicked opportunity to play records which I really enjoy mixing at home – this appropriately includes a lot of purchases from phonica where I love the house selections you have. The idea behind this was to play something for my dad who has amazing taste esp in acid and Chicago – couple tracks I’ve played are his – out to you Marc B.

What are your preferred methods for finding new music—do you still enjoy digging around in dusty crates, or do you prefer to buy online?

I’m defiantly a discogs girl as I love getting into a hole and zoning into an undiscovered label or alias but digging for me at record shops is a social thing – I love discussing music which is how I got to know the Phonica family (out to you Nick) I also love a dig at soul proprietors and planet wax.

So considering this mix is all vinyl what are five records you couldn’t live without 👀?

Dj SS – The Rollers Convention
Lavery – Keep My Cool
Roska – Windbreaker Riddem
Dj SS – Red
Loefah on teklife

What has been one of your most memorable sets over your career?

Dayshift in Sydney – amazing! We did a Swamp 81 tour in NZ and Aus and this was our last set. I played from a scorching 27 into dusk and closed the festival. Really special playing Jungle to a new crowd across the world and seeing people get as excited as I do.

What do you have up your sleeve for 2024?

Hopefully another Aus tour with Benton and plenty of festivals over the summer.

Thanks Leila 🙂
