All good things must come to end as they say. In this instance producer and DJ Ysanne recently departed ways with us at Phonica having held it down for us every Saturday for the last couple of years.
Having worked behind our counter as well as working some time as an artist agent Ysanne is now taking a step forward in her own musical journey. With gigs stacking up in her favour as well as her own productions appearing on records labels like Semi Delicious & her own solo EP potentially on the horizon it was time we grabbed Ysanne for a mix. And what a mix, with just over an hour Ysanne takes us on a journey through variations of styles, moving euphoric rhythms into more techy and harder moments as it progresses this mix is a perfect calling card as what to expect from one of her sets. Be sure to check her out at festivals like Love International this year, on her AAJA radio show and at her Percolate residency. You won’t regret it. We had a quick chat with Ysanne, about the mix, what she has coming up and her time in Phonica.
Hey Ysanne, thanks for joining us! Can you tell us about your mix and what the idea behind it was?
Thanks for having me 🙂 There wasn’t really a premeditated idea as such, it’s more just a general journey through some of my collection. There’s a bit of house, minimal, proggy stuff, some percussive bits, some stuff I’d forgotten about, a classic or two. I wanted to start slow, warm it up and get a bit weird with it.
What are your preferred methods for finding new music—do you still enjoy digging around in dusty crates, or do you prefer to buy online?
It’s both for me. Nothing beats rifling round some bargain bins, chatting to other fellow real life music nerds when you’re on your travels or having someone local who just knows what to pick out for you. But I’m also an avid Discogs fan for discovery, raiding old collections and access to shops that are a bit out of reach.
You recently moved on from Phonica and we were of course very sad to say goodbye – did you have any nice memories from working with us over the years?
No.
Just kidding, my weekends will never be the same! Too many nice memories to list, but it’s the dream job, my favourite thing to do is share good tunes with my pals and that’s basically the gig isn’t it?Other than that (many) Phonica in-stores, record store days will always be up there and playing before Dan Shake at Junction 2 to celebrate 20 years of Phonica was a pretty special moment.
What is your dream setting for a DJ set?
The longer the better usually! I’m happiest in a sweaty club or a sunrise/sunset festival set is nice too isn’t it?But also, let’s not forget where the real work gets done — I’m a great lover of a set at the afters.
What do you have up your sleeve for 2024?
Working on a bunch of new music that I’m looking forward to finally getting out into the world, hopefully also dropping my debut EP(!). I’m also excited to be hopping on the festival circuit to play some of my favourites including Love International in Croatia, Waterworks and Body Movements, and I’ll be playing a couple of shows with BICEP as part of their Chroma AV tour in July as well.
