Jennifer Loveless steps up to the Phonica mix with a charged hour of sculpted house — poised between deep groove and melodic resonance.
Born in Toronto and musically forged in Melbourne, she relocated to Australia in 2012 and quickly became a central figure in the country’s underground electronic scene. Now based in Berlin, her fluid DJ style — steeped in queer dancefloor energy and late-night catharsis — has lit up some of the world’s most respected booths, from Panorama Bar and De School to Body Movements, Maricas/Mxricas, and Boiler Room’s Discwoman showcase in Sydney.
As a producer, her discography speaks in rhythms both personal and expansive. The debut Hard/Soft (Pure Space, 2020) blended meditative percussion and fragmented spoken word; 1.5m (Planet Euphorique) offered a pandemic-era pulse of emotional urgency. In 2021, the Water EP (Butter Sessions) landed with immersive, club-primed textures and was hailed by Resident Advisor as “career-defining.” Its 2022 follow-up Around the World expanded that sound with driving drums and psychedelic tones — its standout tracks appearing in DJ sets by Jayda G, D. Tiffany, and more.
Loveless’s mix here flows like her best sets: deep, intuitive, and full of movement. Sensual grooves fold into one another — not showy, just sharp. A warm, high-fidelity hour from a DJ who knows how to guide the floor from dusk to afterglow. We had a brief chat with Jennifer about the mix and what she has coming up:
Hey Jennifer, thanks so much for joining us! Can you tell us about your mix and what the idea behind it was?
I always like to take the chance with a podcast/mix to play records I love but might not work in a DJ setting. In this case, this is a sexy downtempo mix that I hope will provide a little bit of respite from the chaos of summer. I think it could be enjoyed alone on a weekday or at a pre’s or post.
What are your preferred methods for finding new music—do you still enjoy digging around in dusty crates, or do you prefer to buy online?
I prefer the combination of all, I feel like I dig differently in each scenario and enjoy the difference of finds that come out of each experience. I am also a chronic mix listener and also enjoy finding new music that way, it often involves reaching out to the mix maker and asking the question, which can be a nice little connection formed.
What are five records you couldn’t live without?
There are so many records that I love and would add to my “couldn’t live without” list, but I can reach back and pick 5 that really shaped the start of my electronic music journey.
Moodymann – Moodymann
DJ Koze – Amygdala
Herbert – 100lbs
Lady Blacktronika – First Lady of Beatdown
Mount Kimbie – Crooks & Lovers
What has been one of your most memorable sets over your career?
Horst Festival 2023 – Beyond it being an incredible festival (probably my top 3), it was my first year in Europe and it felt like a real milestone moment.
What do you have up your sleeve for 2025?
I’m currently working on new music and in a nice place with that. I also just finished and performed a live ambient set for Fabric, which I haven’t done in quite some years. I might delve more into that realm.
In terms of touring, I can’t believe we are already nearly halfway through summer. I am looking forward to returning to Love International Festival, Lowlands Festival, Lost Village Festival, as well as playing Dekmantel Selectors for the first time. After summer, I will be over in the Americas and returning to Asia for the first time in some years before heading back for my annual Australia migration.
Thanks Jennifer! Have a great rest of your Summer!
