Phonica Mix Series 106:
Crazy P

PhonicaGuestMix106-Blog

One of the true pioneers of live disco and dance music in Britain over the last 15 years gets its grips into our mix series. Off the back of their excellently selected curation 12″ series on 20/20 vision and the banger filled remix series(featuring Gerd Janson, DJ Nature and more) of their seminal “Age Of Ego” album from back in 2019 it has proved that Crazy P show no signs of slowing down. For this mix the band have put together many styles that have clearly influenced their sound and yet this is still an all out ball-room ready party ready to go! We had a chat with the band about the mix and and what they have been up to lately:

Hey Crazy P, thanks for joining us! Can you tell us about your mix and what the idea behind it was?

It’s an hour of all sorts. The music we play is quite broad stylistically so wanted to make sure you got a bit of everything in there. It moves around quite a bit but hopefully flows too.

Can you tell us a bit about how you usually approach recording a mix or a set?

I generally compile the tunes we want to include then just press record and see if I can fit them into some semblance of order. Mixes like this are a good opportunity to get a bit more listener focused as opposed to having a dancefloor to fill. You can take a few more risks.

What are your preferred methods for finding new music—do you still enjoy digging around in dusty crates, or do you prefer to buy online?

A mix really. Buying new online, and old stuff on discogs. There’s a golden mile of charity shops near to where I live and regular trips there often uncover some gems. I might still even car boot if I can raise myself in time!

The remixes of your Age Of Ego album have been a top seller in the shop! To you, what is the meaning of the “Age Of Ego”?

It’s the increasing propensity to show your self-worth, your personal brand. Empathy and understanding are being replaced by the perceived need to make it all about ‘you’. The ego is currency, unfortunately, it’s generally at the cost of people’s feelings.

We are currently also loving the curation series on 20/20 Vision, how did this project come about and what was the process of picking the tracks?

We really enjoyed our time working with Ralph Lawson when we did two albums with 20/20 Vision and we were looking for a project where we could re-kindle that relationship. The concept was Ralph’s idea and we loved it. The process was simple really, approach our favourite producers for exclusive material and see what came out the other side. We’ve been stoked with the response and the quality of music and to have some of our heroes like A Certain Ratio and Danielle Baldelli included has been a real coup!

What do you have up your sleeve for 2023?

More Curate releases to come – there’s still Volume Three and Four on the horizon. A new Crazy P album is well underway and sounds like it’s going to be a pearl the priority is to finish that in between a busy gig schedule.

Thanks Crazy P 🙂
