Phonica Friends & Family Mix Series 26:
Scott (Hudson’s Choice)

PhonicaFriends banner 26

Scott Hudson — better known behind the decks as Hudson’s Choice — is one of South-London’s up and coming perceptive vinyl diggers and tastemakers. Based in the UK, he’s built his reputation through a deep love for house, disco, and worldly, soulful electronic sounds — both as a DJ and a record-collector.
In 2024 he delivered his debut EP, Myatts Field, on Delusions of Grandeur, co-produced with label-founder Jimpster — a release that showcased his ability to weave classic sensibilities with contemporary left-field club energy.
This “Friends & Family” mix in the spirit of working at Phonica Records, feels like a carefully curated journey through his musical universe. You can expect flickers of deep house, nods to disco and soul, maybe a touch of dubby wanderlust — a mix that reflects his dual life as both DJ and digger, uniting records from different eras and cultures into one seamless set! We had a quick chat with Scott about his mix and about what he has coming in 2026:

Hey Scott, thanks for joining us! Can you tell us about your mix and what the idea behind it was?

My absolute pleasure & thanks for having me! WIth this mix I wanted to fit as many of my sonic influences in as I could & still have it make sense as a continuous play which builds in energy. When I play for longer periods of time I really enjoy the prospect of playing music which wouldn’t ordinarily be placed in the same bracket but try to thread them in my own way. This is what really keeps me interested as a DJ.

What are your preferred methods for finding new music—do you still enjoy digging around in dusty crates, or do you prefer to buy online?

I think I’ll always romanticise physically digging in record shops, I love the community aspect of record shops. So many nice memories of digging with friends which you obviously can’t replace staying at home. That being said I do love a Bandcamp dig!

Outside of Phonica you work for Freerange Records? What do you do there?

I do indeed. With it being a relatively small team of 7 or so, we all chip in where we can. We’ve recently started a distribution arm which I’ve taken a lot of the responsibility to manage. Keep me on my toes for sure!

What are five records you couldn’t live without?

What a question ..

Lonnie Liston Smith – Expansions

New Jersey Connection – Love Don’t Come Easy

Extra T’s – E.T Boogie

Larry Heard – The Calm & Chaos

Maze & Frankie Beverly – Twilight

What has been one of your most memorable sets over your career?

I’d have to say the last time I played at Space Talk was really memorable. I’ve played there a few times with a good friend of mine, Will & we always come away from a session there feeling energised. I think it’s a combination of amazing sound, curation & staff who are really passionate / knowledgeable about what they’re involved in. This last time there was a really up for it dancefloor too which is probably why it was most memorable .. Viva Space Talk!

What do you have up your sleeve for 2025?

I suppose there’s not much left now but I’m working on a follow up to ‘Myatts Field’, a release I put out on Delusions Of Grandeur with Franc Spangler AKA Jimpster a year or so back. Other than that, continuing to broaden my musical horizons in as many ways I can which includes working in Phonica on the weekends 🙂
