Our Friends & Family Mix series is back in action and this month we welcome all the way from Berlin; Tom. You may recognise Tom as the booker and resident DJ at Kottbusser hot spot Paloma or from his recent release on the club’s in house label “Lose Yourself”. With a new release forthcoming on Frank Music we were delighted get Tom to supply a mix for us which of course is recorded live from inside Paloma. We had a chat with Tom about Paloma, what he has going on and the mix.
Hey, thanks for joining us Tom! Can you tell us about your mix and what the idea behind it was?
Hey (:
The mix is a live recording from my opening at Paloma in December. It was a super fun night with Yamour, Natascha Kann, Lewin Paul and Freddy & Tammo
What are your preferred methods for finding new music—do you still enjoy digging around in dusty crates, or do you prefer to buy online?
Both actually. I try to go to a record shop at least once a month. But I do also really enjoy opening a million Discogs tabs (laughs).
On the production side of things, how would you describe your sound to people who have not listened to you before?
Finn Johannsen did a great job at explaining my sound:
Ok, let’s just be honest. Tom is an impatient type. You can feel he is not having it. All that doom and gloom of the recent past, the feeling of being betrayed by things you cannot change for the better, however hard you try. And still you try. You could also say he is quite the escapist. He obviously believes in an utopia where people are buzzing on a club floor, free, happy and united. This is most probably why his music sounds how it sounds. It serves a purpose.
Tom also seems to be longing for his music to feature everything he likes, and due to said impatience he does not distribute his ideals and ideas to many different tunes, instead he aims to make them work in just a few tunes. And how they do work. They work so well in fact, that fulfilling this purpose mentioned above is not theoretical in the slightest.
Wailing divas singing to divas, all pride and joy? Check. Pumping kick drums and bass like they do not do this anymore? Check. Euphoric pianos like only Italians could imagine Chicago would sound? Check. Pad drama to counter the punch? Check. Acid to the highest point of intensity? Check.
You’ve been the booker for Paloma for some time now, what have been some of the highlights in the club over the years?
Start of this year, I invited Mr Redley and that was the best set I heard in a long time. You should really check him out!!
Some other musical highlights were: Kyle hall, Amy Dabbs b2b Natalie Capello, Todd Edwards, 2 Bad Mice, Yamour and Acidfinky
Who are some of your dream artists you would love to have play a b2b in the upstairs room of Paloma?
DJ Bone
Scott Grooves
Steffi
Moxie
What do you have up your sleeve for 2023?
I just released an Ep on Johannes Alberts Frank Music. It’s featuring a super cool US gospel singer and called “Watch Me“
I‘m also organising a new festival in a very very special location in Sachsen this year, called Good2U. Besides that, we‘re also working on some big news for Paloma! Keep your eyes peeled.
Thanks Tom 🙂
