Off The Record Mix Series 65:
Benedikt Frey

OTR MIX New Website 65

Some mixes are snapshots of the present; others trace a much longer arc. Benedikt Frey’s contribution to Off The Record belongs firmly to the latter. Built around jungle records he first bought as a teenager, it’s a deeply personal excursion that reconnects with the sounds that shaped his musical identity. That sense of history has long defined Frey’s approach—as a DJ, producer and label co-founder, his sets unfold with patience and intuition, favouring emotion over convention. Here, memories of formative dancefloors collide with decades of experience behind the decks, resulting in a mix that feels both nostalgic and strikingly alive. With new music arriving across Club Blanco, R.i.O. and Turbo Recordings over the coming year, it’s another compelling chapter from one of electronic music’s most quietly distinctive selectors.

Hey Benedikt, thanks so much for joining us! Can you tell us about your mix and what the idea behind it was?

Since months I wanted to record a jungle mix with some old records I bought in my teenage years. Finally I managed to.

What are your preferred methods for finding new music – do you still enjoy digging around in dusty crates, or do you prefer to buy online?

To be honest, I’m not constantly on the lookout for new records because, these days, doing that has become a real luxury. But if I have the time, some change left , and the right setting, I’d probably find most of the stuff online.

What would be a memorable set you played that sticks out in your mind?

I think one of them would be Am Bach Festival, where I played on Sunday morning. It was accompanied by a dramatic change in the weather, as it suddenly started pouring with rain. The crowd came together to keep the dance floor dry and protected from the storm, all while continuing to dance. Getting to provide the soundtrack to an apocalyptic scene, followed by a beautiful sunny morning at a festival, was totally my thing—as you might imagine.

What are five records you couldn’t live without?

Not in a particular order:

Shackleton – El Din
Dr. Octagon – Instrumentallyst
Can – Soundtracks
Metalheadz Limited Edition Box Set
Aaron Carl – Uncloseted

What do you have up your sleeve for 2026/2027?

In autumn 26 there will be another EP on Club Blanco. Two collaboration tracks on a new crazy Various Artist record on our label R.i.O. as INIT and Kolonie 38. Spring 2027 there will be a heavy double EP on Turbo Recordings as Benedikt Frey. And you’ll also find some remixes dripping in at some point later this year. One is for Ford Proco – Del Fin on Technologies Elementales The other will be for WHRK – Jerry Morrigan . A Remix I did in 2017 and thought might never come out, but they just wrote me a couple of days ago. Last but not least one for Boysonic – You And Me on Ondes. Two of them were super special to work on since it was old-odd material recorded in the 90’s. Working on these old stems was a real challenge but very rewarding in the end since all artists were super happy with the outcome. 🙂
