We change up the pace for Off The Record 52 with Palestinian/Egyptian DJ & producer Oldyungmayn.
With a multifaceted identity layered through both his productions and performances, influenced from 90’s era rave, sharpened sound design, and a wide spectrum of music he fiinds these stylings have taken him to the decks at Amsterdam’s Garage Noord, Herrensauna and a performance at the experimental festival CTM to name a few. For this mix Oldyungmayn digs deep into more leftfield sounds and less so 4/4 club sounds, that being said this mix can find its way to being played at all hours of the night. Driving yet euphoric. We had a very brief chat with the artist about the mix and what he has coming up:
Can you tell us about your mix and what the idea behind it was?
I wanted this mix to have a lot of bass and avoid leaning too much into any predictable “4 on the floor” sounds.
What are your preferred methods for finding new music—do you still enjoy digging around in dusty crates, or do you prefer to buy online?
I usually look for music online through discogs, soundcloud and through sharing and networking with producers directly.
Five records you couldn’t live without off the top of your head?
The Future Sound of London – Papua New Guinea
Infinity + Infinity – Big Bud
Caterina Barbieri – Ecstatic Computation
Autechre – Amber
Coil – Time Machines
What is your dream setting for a DJ set?
To DJ in a free Palestine.
What do you have up your sleeve for 2024?
DJ sets and some music releases since i’ve been working on for my album over the past year or so.
