We are finally walking out of the gloom and doom of January with Spring firmly in view. To give us that extra jolt and wipe off them cobwebs we have reached out to drum & bass and jungle master Tim Reaper to put a shock to our system.
Tim is without doubt one of the striving forces in pushing a new wave of drum & bass and jungle in London and beyond. Alongside other names like Sully, Kloke, Stones Taro and Coco Bryce, Tim has brought a old school sound to an entirely new generation – sounds similar to alumni like Source Direct & Commix but with a new twist. With closing out 2024 with his new album “In Full Effect” with Australian producer Kloke on Hyperdub to much critical acclaim, the name Tim Reaper has never been bigger! So with that being said we are very honoured to have him join us for our series. For Tim’s mix he takes us on an hour and half deep dive that he describes as the more chilled side to D&B and Jungle – but don’t be fooled this mix definitely has a bit of power behind it. We had a brief chat with Tim about the mix and what he has gotta coming up this year.
Hey Tim, thanks for joining us! Can you tell us about your mix and what the idea behind it was?
The idea behind the mix is the more mellow & chilled side of jungle, old & new, that I really like listening to & mixing but don’t often get to play in club settings.
What are your preferred methods for finding new music—do you still enjoy digging around in dusty crates, or do you prefer to buy online?
When I was young, I started off browsing online for music, using Discogs & YouTube & mixes with tracklists to find out as much as I could about jungle, & I feel like I became quite used to being able to discover music I want a lot quicker and more successfully on the internet vs browsing through shelves in physical stores (even though I’ve still been able to find some great tunes there also!)
What are five records you couldn’t live without?
I say these as they are most definitely some of my most played records (but that also varies based on how I’m feeling atm selection wise)
Splash – Babylon
Tom & Jerry – Air Freshener
Aurora – Firin’ To The Core
Danny Breaks – Step Off (Splash Remix)
Dillinja & Berty B – Lionheart
What has been one of your most memorable sets over your career?
The first one that comes to mind is when me, Dwarde, Coco Bryce & Sully did our b4b at Boomtown last year, on the Origin stage, which I think is the biggest one of the festival. I didn’t actually know how big it would be until we turned up at the festival and I saw the sheer amount of people there and the size of it, so glad I wasn’t up there on my own lol
What do you have up your sleeve for 2024/5?
A lot more music from myself & others on my label Future Retro London, another release on Hyperdub, some non-jungle releases from myself & some other things I can’t announce yet!
Thanks Tim 🙂
