Phonica Mix Series 136: Jayson Wynters

phonica mix BANNER 136

The tuned in selector Jayson Wynters gives us a masterclass for the latest Phonica mix.

From the shadowy basement grooves of early Detroit-tinged techno to the soulful echoes of deep house and Balearic atmospheres, Jayson Wynters’ Phonica mix is a distilled journey through the sounds that animate his DJ sets. A Birmingham native who cut his teeth releasing records like Latitude, Solitude, and Warheads / Exit Wound, Wynters has built a reputation for pacing, depth, and an ear for both the new and the buried treasures in his vinyl rack. In this mix he begins in more ethereal territory—drawing listeners in with introspective textures—before gradually escalating the energy, taking us into a place where he usually finds himself halfway through one of his live sets, guiding the dancefloor through intensity, emotion, and release.
We had a quick chat with Jayson about the mix and what he has coming up:

Hey Jayson, thanks for joining us! Can you tell us about your mix and what the idea behind it was?

I wanted to give a snapshot of the different styles of electronic music I am into with a focus on House & Techno. Starting off a little deep and ethereal but wanting to escalate things in a timely manner so people can get stuck in on the floor. So the imagination behind it is I have a limited time to get my point across and this is where you might find me midway through a live DJ set. Whilst embracing new music I often also like to draw references to the past of what built the foundation. Most of the records showcased are recent purchases bought over the last few months as well as some bits in my library I forgot about or rediscovered. I finished the mix with a track from Rekab who I’ve just learnt we lost recently so I guess in a serendipitous way this mix could also be paying respects to another talented producer we’ve lost.

What are your preferred methods for finding new music—do you still enjoy digging around in dusty crates, or do you prefer to buy online?

People/ Friends are the best sources for finding music in my opinion. I still love going to records shops that’s like toy store for me as an adult and I also dig online as it’s also great for discovering new music.

What are five records you couldn’t live without?

In terms of influences? This is not definitive (as it’s really an impossible question to answer) but off the top of the dome I will put…

Herbie Hancock – Sextant

Ghost Face Killah – Supreme Clientele

J Dilla – Climax

Kerri Chandler – In the morning

Lonnie Liston Smith & the Cosmic Echoes – Expansions

What has been one of your most memorable sets over your career?

Breaking my Houghton festival cherry in 2018. I played on the clearing stage and really enjoyed the buildup. I had so many people giving me compliments at the festival and months after outside of it. And more recently in Aug 2025 at the new space called OM which is the brain child of Amit and Aneesh who run Brilliant Corners/Giant Steps. This place has been dubbed as the ‘New Plastic People’ which is a massive compliment. You can feel the love gone into every crevice and detail they’ve constructed. Impeccable sound, intimate dance floor it has a very spiritual feel to it. I was invited to soundtrack the nights entire 7 hours which was my first all nighter in London.. of course I was a little nervous but the time flew by and I had so much fun weaving in and out of time zones via styles and genres.

What do you have up your sleeve for 2025?

Another all-nighter on 3rd October at OM, prepping for my set at Berghain/Panorama bar at the end of September a few more gigs in the pipeline and back in the studio finishing off some music.

Thanks Jayson 🙂
