The Phonica series drifts Amsterdam way for the next addition in its series with not one but two of the cities most prominent artists.
Kamma & Masalo supply separately in their sets nothing but magical moments so when you have the chance to see them play together it is that times two and some. Never knowing what the direction and vibe their set will go – having roots in eclectic and disco vibes as well clubbier house, techno and acid sounds (a vibe they cement at their Brighter Days party in Amsterdam) – they have firmly placed themselves on top shelf list of some of Europes finest selectors. Appearing regularly at festivals like Dekmantel and Japan’s Rainbow Disco Club to name a few, the duo have played some of the best clubs around the world. For Phonica 131 Kamma and Masalo have the dancefloor in mind with a mix focused on their beginnings in the underground club scene of their upbringing. We had a quick chat with them about the mix and what they have coming up!
Hey Kamma & Masalo, thanks for joining us! Can you tell us about your mix and what the idea behind it was?
It’s a mixture of feelings inspired by our recent club gigs, as well as testing out some recent digs and productions. It’s a reflection of how we experienced growing up in the Amsterdam club scene and how we like to play: crossing through different styles and moods, playing with energy and weaving through our separate minds, improvising over each others selection, combining elements that might seem unexpected but come together naturally. We never really have a plan and if we do, it’s so hard to follow it’s since we both have our own ways, so we always just trust our instincts and let the music flow.
What are five records you couldn’t live without?
Coudn’t live without… as in, if we’d go to an island forever and we can only bring 5 records? Albums for sure then!
D’Angelo – Voodoo
NERD – In Search Of…
Geinoh Yamashirogumi – Akira OST
Ramp – Come Into Knowledge
Los Hermanos – On Another Level
What has been one of your most memorable sets over your career?
So hard to pick one! We’re blessed with so many memorable moments…Gala Festival in London (2023) was so special with the crowd all around us, like we’re all in a dome feeding of on each others energy and positivity, the energy built-up was unreal. Our own Brighter Days parties in Amsterdam are always something special and we put a lot of time and effort in, to make sure the sound, aesthetics and the vibes are on point so the rest is an unpredictable chaos of dance and celebration. And having our dearest friends and family on the dancefloor with us just makes it all even more memorable.
What do you have up your sleeve for 2025?
This year, we’re both also diving deeper into our own paths—Masalo with his live set, Kamma with her Dance II Care events—each one pushing us creatively in new ways. And everything we’re doing solo feeds right back into what we do together! There is more K&M music is on the way! Furthermore, we’ll be playing a string of shows with Japan’s Rainbow Disco Club on their EU tour, and we’re excited to return to Dekmantel this summer. We’ve also got some Brighter Days parties coming that we could only have dreamed of when we started!
Thanks so much! 🙂
