A DJ whose taste stretches the realms of Nu Beat, Afro, Cosmic, Disco, House and funky Techno; we are delighted to welcome Jaime Fiorito for our next Phonica Friends and Family mix. Having been exposed to such a large vast knowledge of music through his father, the legendary Balearic don DJ Alfredo, Jaime from a young age was born to follow in his footsteps. His style of DJing which currently touches off leftfield house & techno, disco, African rhythms and seductive balearic have seen him touchdown at hot spots all over Ibiza, South America and Berlin’s Panorama Bar. We had a brief chat with Jaime about the mix and to see what hes been getting up to lately:
Hey Jaime, thanks for joining us! Can you tell us about your mix and what the idea behind it was?
The idea behind the mix is purely about playing what I was in the mood for that day. I find it difficult to plan a precise set of tracks without a crowd, so I typically start with the first track that suits my mood and take it from there. It’s not always the best approach, as sometimes I can get stuck on the first track for days lol.
What are your preferred methods for finding new music—do you still enjoy digging around in dusty crates, or do you prefer to buy online?
I like every possible way of finding music. Usually, I go through my old record collection, and when I find something that sounds the way I want, I look online for the same artist or label and check what they’ve been producing around the same time and build up from there. I realize that many of the artists or labels I like are extinct, but it gives me a starting point, and I then end up exploring modern stuff too. I sometimes also go through all genres in a record shop online but I really prefer to just go to the shop and get a vibe of the place and also get recommendations from the staff.
Five records you couldn’t live without off the top of your head?
Again, it really depends on my mood. Today is different from when I was recording the mix, for example. Some tracks I’d probably have in my bag for the next mix or set would be:
Melodies of Passion – Living like the Big Band is a track I recently discovered in my fathers record collection. Something between Trance and Progressive house with an epic flute solo in the middle.
Rickster – Night Moves is probably one of my all time favorite records, I only play it on special occasions.
Depeche’s Mode – Behind the Wheel (Peter’s Black Not Tonight Remix) is amazing!
Eddy Grant’s Electric Avenue (Ringbang Remix) that came out around the same time 2000-2001 are two bangers I want to play out again.
On the deeper side Pepe Bradock’s Deep Burnt is alway around for an end of night drop.
What is your dream setting for a DJ set?
Outdoor location, high end sound (D&B, L Acoustics, Etc.) playing a long set from 6pm to 2am, 200-300 people, ideally close to nature and a natural source of water. No phones and no VIP Bulshit.
What do you have up your sleeve for 2024?
To be honest, this year has been a time of stepping back and gaining a new perspective for me. The world is changing at a very fast pace since post-Covid, and I feel that things aren’t always shifting in the right direction. I’m taking a bit of a break from going from one gig to the next with the idea of getting closer to what really drives me. I’d like to create a new music space, something in hospitality with a focus on eclectic music and arts programming, and of course, I’m always happy to play music on special occasions 🙂
