Our next Friends and Family mix comes from one of our staff newest to DJing. That being said in a short amount of time Phonica family member Josh Fortune (a.k.a Rark Mothko) has built up his reputation to secure a residency on Voices Radio as well as playing monthly at Soho hot spot The Social. For this mix Josh takes us on a journey of some of his select club focused records mainly in the realms of tech and classical house music. Mixed to perfection this is a solid hour and perfect calling card to one of Phonica’s newest residence.
We had a small chat with Josh about records, the mix and what he has coming up:

Hey Josh, thanks for joining us! Can you tell us about your mix and what the idea behind it was?

I just want to play music that I love. I treated it as if I was just mixing at home and picked the tunes that felt right for me. I knew I wanted it to be non-stop and it needed to be fun, so the mix is full of tracks I never get tired of.

What are your preferred methods for finding new music—do you still enjoy digging around in dusty crates, or do you prefer to buy online?

Working at Phonica, I try to keep track of everything that comes through the shop. So some of this mix is compiled through that, otherwise it is mostly my own digging online. Surprisingly Apple Music recommends me a lot of great stuff, I think that’s an underrated way of finding tunes.

Five records you couldn’t live without off the top of your head?

Julia Holter – Aviary
Miles Davis – On The Corner
Mr. Ho – Eu li
Dream Dolphin – Gaia: Selected Ambient & Downtempo Works (1996-2003)
Stereolab – Refried Ectoplasm (Switched On Volume 2)

What is your dream setting for a DJ set?

I enjoy playing for crowds but I always think it’s better when my friends come to gigs. The pressure is on then and I end up locking in to try and impress them or make them dance. It would need to be outside and sunny too… with a drink in my hand.

What do you have up your sleeve for 2024?

I do monthly shows for voices which lean more towards ambient, neoclassical, contemporary folk etc. which I find is a great way to escape dance music when it gets too much. I play at The Social every month too which is the best place to catch me. I’ve been working on more of my own music too, hopefully I find a home for that soon.
