Hollering from the deep south of New Zealand a sound is pumping through the Earth, all the way through to Europe via Munich, then to Berlin and now its travelling to the UK and beyond. That sound is the Big Beat Manifesto. A sound that Mr. Eden Burns has produced to us over 6 volumes and all pressed to wax via the loving hand of Public Possession. This cross over of addictive club sonics and balearic undertones has seen the likes of Solomun, Jennifer Cardini, Jamie Tiller, Huge DJ Party Alerts, Gerd Janson and more taking various systems worldwide for the test drive of their lives with these sounds. Aside from producing these melodies Eden has deemed himself quite the DJ with Boiler Room(a personal favourite of ours), club and festival appearances galore. For this mix Eden picks some of his favourite club cuts but guides us through an hour which seems to be a summary of a set that could easily go into the 4 hour mark. A fine calling card. We had a quick chat with Eden about what he’s been up to a little about the mix:
Hey Eden, Thanks for joining us! Can you tell us about the idea behind your mix?
Hello! Thanks for having me! There is not a huge lot of thought behind this mix to be completely honest. Just some club tracks I have been enjoying recently from friends, plus some old favourites and some unreleased stuff!
How and where was the mix recorded?
This mix was recorded on my computer (nothing fancy sorry!) from the comfort of my apartment where I am currently staying in Berlin between gigs.
Could you tell us a little bit about your background, perhaps where you grew up and what first got you interested in music?
I grew up in the South Island of New Zealand. I started playing drums in bands at a very young age and went on to producing when I was about 12 or so. I was making hip hop beats and doing a lot of sampling, i guess this is where I started digging lots and finding a lot of different music. I then started DJing and ended up playing at a local bar in Dunedin every week when I was about 16!
What’s your preferred method for finding new music—do you still enjoy digging around in dusty crates, or do you prefer to buy online?
I definitely prefer going to record shops! Going down weird rabbit holes on discogs is also great! Also, what ever my friends send me is usually great too.
Your Big Beat Manifesto series on Public Possession are a favourite here at Phonica, what was the idea behind this series of records?
Thanks! The main idea is its seriously not serious dance music 🙂
What do you have up your sleeve for 2022?
There’s a Big Beat Manifesto Remix EP coming out later this year featuring some remixes from some really nice artists and friends! Plus another record with my friend Christopher Tubbs!
