New York-based DJ and producer Brian Piñeyro, better known as DJ Python, joins us for the 85th edition of the Phonica Mix Series.
Piñeyro first came crash landing onto our radar back in 2017 with his Reggaeton, Dancehall and Deep house influenced debut album, Dulce Compañia, which became an instant hit with all of the staff (and customers) here at Phonica.
A tough release to follow up from, Brian pulled it off (big time) in 2020 when he returned to Anthony Naples’ Incienso label with his second full-length album, Mas Amable. We loved this one so much that we named it one of our favourite albums of 2020.
We reached out to our serpentine friend from the States to see if he would be interested in putting together a club-focused mix for our series. He sure did deliver! You can check out Brian’s hyperactive one-hour-long recording below, alongside a short but very sweet interview. Enjoy!
Hey Brian, thanks for joining us! Can you tell us about your recording and what the idea was behind it…
Not too much behind it. Just played for an hour 🙂 No idea behind it. Was fun to do. Was in the studio with some friends listening as they worked.
Could you tell us a little bit about your background, perhaps where you grew up and what first got you interested in music?
I grew up in new york and Miami. I liked music for as long as I can remember. It felt good to listen to early on in my life. Still feels too good to listen to.
For anyone out there that may not already be familiar with your musical productions, how would you describe your sound?
I like warm sounds. People say the music is dreamy. I like different kinds of drums.
What are some of your favourite record labels out there at the moment?
Incienso, Tobago Tracks, Planet Euphorique, Felix Hall’s “Chrome”, Bokeh, Wisdom Teeth.
What’s your preferred method for finding new music – do you still enjoy digging around in dusty crates (when record shops are open!) or do you prefer to buy online?
I like to look for tunes on Discogs youtube and in stores. Also just talking to friends about music is my favorite way to find out about new music. I think youtube channels influence music tastes more than people admit.
And what about these crazy lockdown times we’re facing today. What’s been keeping you going through it all?
It’s been open here in new york for a minute it feels so it is nice to be reconnecting with people. trying to make new friends and all of this. hm, I guess I was routine mode making tunes and trying to eat healthily and work out and sleep a good amount. Taking baths too. It is nice to talk with people and read and be outside and stuff like this. go to nature if you can. that’s always very nice. Volunteer when I can. Trying to meet people outside of shared interests.
